What is TMD?

Temporomandibular Disorder (TMD), commonly referred to as TMJ, is caused by pain in the temporomandibular joints (TMJ). The TMJ is a hinge joint, located near the ears, that connects the lower jawbone to the skull. These joints aid in daily oral and facial movements such as chewing, speaking, swallowing, and yawning.

Like any other joint in your body, these joints experience normal wear and tear, causing pain and other issues over time. Likewise, if you’ve experienced trauma to the facial area, such as a car accident or sports injury, these injuries can also cause skeletal, muscular, or joint problems.

What Are the Symptoms of TMD?

Various symptoms of TMD include:

  • Pain in the jaw area
  • Frequent headaches or neck aches
  • Swelling on the sides of the face
  • Pain or ringing in the ears
  • Muscle spasms in the jaw area
  • Clicking or popping when the jaw moves
  • Misalignment of top and bottom teeth
  • Limited opening of the mouth, or lockjaw

Common TMD Treatments

At our dental practice, we approach TMD treatment beginning with the least invasive option first. Some of the most common treatments include:

  • Splint therapy, such as specific TMJ splints or nightguards.
  • Muscle therapy, such as Botox.
  • Adjustments to the bite, also known as occlusion.
  • Orthodontic treatments for realignment of teeth.
  • Oral or TMJ surgery.

If oral surgery is needed, our clinic has a working relationship with oral surgeons who are specifically trained in treating TMJ disorders. We will gladly provide a referral to one of these highly recommended dental surgeons.

Our practice also offers a free helpful guide for home treatments for muscle spasms or pain associated with TMD, “Acute Muscle Spasm and/or TMJ Pain.” Depending on the specific type of TMJ pain you are experiencing, this downloadable guide of over-the-counter treatments may be helpful.
